Metals & Steel

The challenge

Heavy coils, bars and sheet bundles that must not shift, unwind or get damaged on the way.

Steel coils and bundles are dense loads with sharp edges, so they are usually secured with high-tensile steel strapping or heavy-duty PET strap, sealed with a seal or friction weld. Edge protectors stop the strap from cutting into the coil and spread the pressure. For ocean freight, plan for long transit times, humidity and repeated handling: choose a strap with enough break strength for the load and keep the load fixed to a pallet or skid.

What we recommend

Solution 1

High-strength strapping

Steel strap for the heaviest coils and bundles; PET strap where you want high tension without rust or sharp cut ends.

Solution 2

Edge protection

Paper edge boards under the strap protect coil edges and sheet corners from strap marks and crushing.

Solution 3

Pallets and skids

A stable base lets forklifts move bundles safely and gives the strap something to anchor to.

Common questions

Steel strap or PET strap for steel products?

Steel strap has the highest break strength and very low stretch, so it is the traditional choice for heavy coils and hot or sharp loads. PET strap is lighter, does not rust and is safer to cut, and it holds tension well on many bundles. The right choice depends on load weight, edges and how the goods will be handled.

Why use edge protectors on coils?

A tensioned strap concentrates force on a narrow line. Edge protectors spread that force, prevent the strap from cutting into the product and help the strap keep its tension.

What should I think about for ocean freight?

Expect humidity, temperature changes and several handling steps. Secure the load to its base, protect edges, and check the requirements of your carrier and the destination country, for example the treatment rules for wooden packaging.
